Each year the Overland Park Rotary Club
selects charities to receive money raised by the Star Spanged Spectacular
event. Charities selected for the year 2005 are The American Lung Association of Kansas, Down Syndrome Guild and The Fox 4 Love Fund for Children. Listed below
is a brief description of these deserving charities.
American Lung Association of Kansas
The American Lung Association of Kansas fights lung disease and promotes lung health in Johnson County, where approximately 50,000 residents suffer from it. Services include tobacco prevention, asthma educationand indoor air quality programs in the schools. One program won a national award from the Environmental Protection Agency in 2004.

Down Syndrome Guild
The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City (DSG) is a non-profit volunteer organization whose mission is to provide support and resources for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The DSG seeks to provide the entire community with information and education to broaden awareness and foster positive attitudes regarding people with Down syndrome. The DSG provides pre and post natal support, seminars, awareness presentations, social activities, support groups, 24 hour phone information line and a comprehensive website to over 250 families in Johnson County.

Fox 4 Love Fund for Children
The Fox 4 Love Fund for Children is dedicated to improving the lives of children in need, 18 and under, when there is no other resource available. Services include clothing, school supplies, sexual abuse counseling and durable medical equipment. Working directly with over 20 social service agencies, churches and public assistance programs in Johnson County, the Love Fund served over 4,000 children in 2004.

Overland Park Rotary Club Youth Leadership Institute (YLI):
One of the goals of Rotary is to help young people develop their leadership abilities and self-confidence to the fullest. In furtherance of this goal, the Overland Park Rotary Club sponsors an annual week long program for a select group of local high school students known as YLI. YLI develops"Tomorrow's Leaders Today" through innovative, challenging and fun-filled activities designed to empower these youth to make a difference in their
home, school, place of work and community. Now in its 12th year, YLI boasts of more than 240 alumni from over 22 area high schools.
Overland Park Rotary Club Foundation:
Rotarians are dedicated to humanitarian service, high ethical standards in
their business and personal life, and the promotion of understanding and
harmony in the communities in which they live. The Overland Park Rotary
Club Foundation fosters and supports charitable and educational programs in
fulfillment of the object of Rotary. The Foundation funds are distributed
either as specified by a particular donor, or at the discretion of its Board
of Trustees. Foundation funds recipients have included Polio Plus,
Southeast Asia Tsunami Relief, The Deanna Rose Farmstead Children's
Playground and students seeking college scholarships.
